About Marty Douglas
Marty Douglas was first licensed as a real estate sales person in 1970. Subsequently, he obtained his agent's license in real estate and general insurance. He has been employed as a salesman and nominee-manager. He has been involved in ownership of several real estate and insurance agencies, all in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island.
Mr. Douglas was first elected to the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board in 1977 and served as President in 1981-82. After serving as a director of the British Columbia Real Estate Association (BCREA) he served as President in 1985-86. BCREA is the industry representative of all Realtors in BC.
In 1988, Mr. Douglas was elected to the Real Estate Council of BC to represent the County of Nanaimo. The Real Estate Council is a statutory body charged with the responsibility of public protection by the assurance of competence and discipline of licensees. He served three terms until 1994. In 1992-93, he served as Chairman.
Since 1994, Mr. Douglas has continued to serve the Industry as an instructor for the Applied Real Estate Course, a member of the Editorial Committee of the Licensee Practice Manual for the Real Estate Council, a member of the BCREA Hamilton/Stanbury Advisory Committee.
He led the Real Estate 2010 Task Force on the future of real estate in the province, which delivered its final report in 1996. He was a member of the Real Estate Directions Enquiry Committee for the Real Estate Foundation, which tabled its report on the industry in 1998.
In 1998, he facilitated a strategic planning session for the Kamloops and District Real Estate Association. In 1999, he facilitated a two-day session with the Executive Officers of all BC Real Estate Boards addressing challenges facing the Boards and their members.
In 1996, Mr. Douglas was appointed to the Board of the Real Estate Errors and Omissions Corporation of BC, which provides cost effective professional liability insurance to real estate licensees. He served as Chair during 1999-2000. His term as a director continues until January 2002.
Mr. Douglas writes a bi-weekly column focusing on community issues for Island Publications and a monthly real estate column for Real Estate Marketing Magazine (REM).
He is the sales manager and nominee for Coast Realty Group (Comox Valley) Ltd., one of nine offices serving Vancouver Island.
Mr. Douglas is married to Mary, a French teacher. They have one daughter, Sarah.
